Let's preserve
the Sunnah of our Prophet
صلى الله عليه وسلم

The joy of welcoming a newborn is indeed an exciting journey in your life. The best way to celebrate this occasion is by practising the Sunnah.

As Muslims, we are encouraged to celebrate this journey
the same way how our Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم practised it.

  1. Giving Adhaan and Iqamah close to the child ears ( Done by the Father or Grandfather)
  2. Performing the Tahnik
  3. Shaving the newborn's hair (Cukur Rambut)
  4. Giving the child a name by the 7th day
  5. Offering an animal sacrifice ( Aqiqah - 7th, 14th or 21st day )

Narrated Saiyidatina Aishah (wife of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم may Allah bless her): People used to bring their newborn children to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, and he would bless them and perform the Tahnik.

Narrated By Salman bin ‘Amir Ad-Dabbi, "I heard Allah’s Apostle saying, ‘Aqiqah is to be offered for a (newly born) boy, so slaughter (an animal) for him, and relieve him of his suffering.”

Narrated Samurah ibn Jundub: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: A boy is in pledge for his aqiqah, Sacrifice is made for him on the seventh day, his head is shaved and he is given name. (Abu Dawood Book #15, Hadith #2832)

Evidences

Sahih Bukhari Book 66. Sacrifice on the Occasion of a Birth (Aqiqah), Narrated By Salman bin ‘Amir Ad-Dabbi I heard Allah’s Apostle saying, ‘Aqiqah is to be offered for a (newly born) boy, so slaughter (an animal) for him, and relieve him of his suffering.”

(Note: It has been quoted in Fateh-al-Bari that the majority of the Religious Scholars agrees to the Hadith narrated in Sahih At-Tirmidhi that the Prophet (Peace be upon Him) was asked about Aqiqah and he ordered 2 sheep for a boy and one sheep for a girl and that is his tradition “Sunnah”.)

Benefits of Aqiqah

  1. One is the announcing the birth of the baby. Being bestowed a child is a great blessing from the Creator.
  2. Another purpose is inviting family members, neighbours, and friends to celebrate the blessed occasion.
  3. Opportunity to feed the poor in the celebration by offering them food and meat served on this occasion.

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, states: “Among the benefits of Aqiqah are:

  1. It is a sacrifice by means of which the child is brought close to Allah soon after he comes into this world.
  2. It is a ransom for the newborn so that he or she can intercede for his parents.
  3. It is a sacrifice by which the newborn is ransomed just as Allah ransomed Prophet Ismail 'alaihis Salam with the ram.

When should Aqiqah be performed?

It is recommended to perform Aqiqah within the first week (and ideally on the seventh day) if not possible, then in the fourteenth, if not, in the twenty first, if not, then at anytime. In addition, it is the recommended Sunnah for parents to give Sadaqah of equal value to the weight in gold of their baby’s hair (when it is shaved on the seventh day after birth).

Conditions of the Animals in AQIQAH

The condition of the animals in Aqiqah is the same as the conditions for the animals in Qurbani. The animals to be slaughtered must be goats, cows or camels. For camels, it must be older than 6 years, for cows the age must be older than 3 years and for goats, it must be older than 2 years. They must be free from any form of handicap such as being blind, sick, limp or undernourished. The animals must be slaughtered in the appropriate humane ways.

Tahnik & Cukur Rambut

One of the manifestations of the deep devotion the companions had for the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, was that when a child was born in the family, they brought the child to him so that he might bless the child, and apply on the child's palate, the pulp of a date etc. The date (or honey) should be chewed to make it easier for the baby to swallow. This is called Tahnik and it is a Sunnah (a practice taught by the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم).

Narrated Saiyidatina Aishah (wife of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم may Allah bless her): People used to bring their newborn children to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, and he would bless them and perform the Tahnik.

Narrated Samurah ibn Jundub: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: A boy is in pledge for his aqiqah, Sacrifice is made for him on the seventh day, his head is shaved and he is given name. (Abu Dawood Book #15, Hadith #2832).

Aqiqah.sg celebrates the birth of a newborn Muslim by offering the Tahnik and Cukur Rambut services at homes or places where you organise your Majlis (event). The service includes the application of dates or honey into the child’s mouth and the first shaving of the baby’s hair. The service is led by an Asatizah, and this service is acquired by appointment only.

Service Fees: $195
*Additional Newborn: $100 per newborn
*If you have more than one newborn for this event, for example twins or doing together with a friend, etc.

*Fees does not include the donation for the weight of the hair.

Umbilical Cord & Placenta - Collection & Burial

Just before the delivery of your baby, the nurse will ask you to sign many forms. Among the items that you will sign off for is to allow the hospital to keep the placenta and umbilical cord or you would want to do something with it. Usually for us Muslims, we will take it and bury somewhere that is deep enough and is out of animal's reach. At this point its your choice if you would want to leave it with the hospital or bury it.

If you choose the latter, you can find a location and bury the placenta and umbilical cord on your own. Or if you don't have the time and do not want to get your hands dirty doing the digging, you can opt for this service.

We offer the following service:

  1. Collect the placenta from the hospital or your home
  2. Cleansing of the placenta and umbilical cord
  3. Sending and commission the grave diggers to dig and bury the placenta for you at the Pusara Aman area / Bedok Reservoir near Masjid Alkaff

Frequently Asked Questions

Must I Aqiqah 2 goats for a son?

It is a Sunnah of our Prophet Sollallahu 'alaihi wasallam to Aqiqah 2 goats for a son. However, if you wish to Aqiqah 1 goat first and another 1 at another time, this is also possible. To order 2 goats, simply change the Quantity to 2 for the Aqiqah package of your choice during registration.

Will you collect and bury the Umbilical Cord and Placenta (Uri) on the same day?

We will usually collect and bury on the same day or latest by the following day. However, if you order outside operating hours, you will have to keep the Uri in your freezer first. We will then contact you on the next working day, to arrange time of collection. Our operating hours are Mondays to Fridays, 10.30 am to 6.30 pm excluding Public Holidays.

My child is grown up already. Can I still do Aqiqah for him/her?

Aqiqah can be done for the child even if it is after many years.

What is the maximum age of a newborn if I want to engage Tahnik and Cukur Rambut?

Our Ustaz will attend to babies who are at most 3 months old. This is because if they are any older, they will fidget and it becomes very difficult to shave the hair.

What is the amount to be donated after shaving of hair? Is this amount included in the fees? Where can I donate this amount?

The amount ranges around $120. This is calculated per gram based on the price of gold. This amount is not included in the fees. You can donate this amount to a close relative who is in need or go to any mosque counter. You can also pass this amount to the Ustaz and he will donate it for you.
